Economic Update October 2026

US Construction Industry Outlook

The latest data heading into October shows spending bouncing back in August and contractors still adding workers, while rising material costs continue to put pressure on margins.

Spending Trends

U.S. construction spending rose 0.9% in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.20 trillion, though it remains 1.7% below a year earlier. Residential, nonresidential, and public spending all increased for the month, with data center construction continuing to stand out.

Labor Market

Construction added about 11,000 jobs in September, led by roughly 16,000 new nonresidential positions while residential employment dipped. The construction unemployment rate came in at 3.5%, signaling continued demand for skilled field labor.

Material Costs

Construction input prices jumped 1.2% in August and are now 8.9% higher than a year ago. Iron and steel, softwood lumber, switchgear, and copper wire and cable are each up more than 10% year over year, making accurate job costing more important than ever.

Tips and Tricks

How to Add Custom Field Names

If your accounting or payroll software uses different field names, the Field Renaming tab allows you to rename those fields within mJob so they match the terminology used in your external systems.

mJob Field Renaming tab for custom field names
01

Match your terminology. Rename mJob fields so they use the same labels as your accounting or payroll system, making it easier for your team to recognize the data they're working with.

02

Sort numeric IDs correctly. If you have fields that use numeric-only IDs, check the box beside the applicable field(s). This causes the codes to sort numerically rather than alphabetically, ensuring they appear in the correct order for users.

Example: Job ID 01001 is numeric-only, while Job ID 0110TX is not. Only enable numeric sorting for fields whose IDs contain numbers only.
